Careers

Speech-language pathology is a field with enormous potential. As the U.S. Department of Labor put it, “Employment of speech-language pathologists is expected to grow rapidly because the expanding population in older-age groups is prone to medical conditions that result in speech, language, and swallowing problems.”

Graduate study is required for national certification, licensure in most states and a public school certificate in Illinois. Communication sciences and disorders majors at Elmhurst have a very high rate of acceptance to graduate school. After earning their graduate degrees, our majors launch dynamic careers in a variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and clinics.

Here are just a few of our outstanding alumni:

  • Jennifer Zagorski Proffer ’06, a speech-language pathologist at Park Ridge-Niles School District 64
  • Marina Peri ’06, a graduate student in Northwestern University’s Communication Sciences and Disorders program, now a clinical educator for Elmhurst’s speech pathology program. Ms. Peri is also employed at a multi-disciplinary private pediatric practice in which she provides therapy services to children (birth-18) with various needs in the clinical, daycare, and home settings.
  • Christopher Spiel ’02, a speech-language pathologist who was recently honored by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association for his innovative development of a peer communication group at Plainfield East High School
  • Sarah Clifford Scheflen ’00, co-founder of Teach 2 Talk
  • Aaron Wilkins ’92, speech-language pathologist at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital
