Disability Studies

U.S. Focus Option

A focus in Disabilities Studies leads to a better understanding of the history, characteristics, roles, contributions, social status and needs of people with disabilities. Students may focus on a specific group (e.g. Deaf Studies) or on a variety of disabilities.

As part of the requirements for a minor in Intercultural Studies, the focus in Disability Studies requires two of the following courses:

  • COM 242 Autism (January Term)
  • CSD 233 Workshop in Sign Language I (1/2 course) AND
  • CSD 236 Workshop in Sign Language II (1/2 course)
  • ICS 280/380 Intercultural Experiential
  • PSY 327 Abnormal Psychology (PSY 210)
  • PSY 427 Child Psychology (PSY 356 and 327)
  • PSY 430 Cognitive Processes (PSY 210, 355 and 456)

Other Options
(As appropriate and approved by the ICS Program Director)

  • ICS 280/380 Intercultural Experiential
  • ICS 390 Special Topics
  • ICS 492 Independent Study
  • Distance learning or transfer course
  • Independent Study with department faculty
  • Study abroad, Chicago Semester or other off-campus study
