About the Integrated Curriculum

The Integrated Curriculum is woven throughout your entire academic career at Elmhurst College, from your first year to your last. Some of the requirements are incorporated into your major or minor coursework, while others will introduce you to new areas of interest.

To begin, the Integrated Curriculum includes a broad spectrum of courses from across the disciplines (“areas of knowledge”) that give you a variety of perspectives on contemporary issues and problems.

In addition, you’ll reinforce key skills and wrestle with your values through a series of “tagged” courses. You'll be able to meet some of these requirements in ways that might surprise you. A literature course could satisfy one of the skill and value requirements, while a course in your major might satisfy another.

The Integrated Curriculum is built around a series of developmental experiences, including a First-Year Seminar, an experiential learning component and a senior capstone. You'll begin by demonstrating proficiency in subject areas such as writing and math.

The Integrated Curriculum also includes a variety of innovative bidisciplinary courses co-taught by faculty members from different disciplines on topics such as Neuroethics, Forensics, and Water and Energy. Bidisciplinary courses typically meet two Area of Knowledge requirements; some also meet a tag requirement.

The components of the EC Integrated Curriculum are informed by national best practices, as embodied in the LEAP Guidelines of the American Association of Colleges and Universities.
