Satisfying the Proficiency Requirements

The Elmhurst College Integrated Curriculum requires students to demonstrate proficiency in writing, mathematics, foreign language and computer technology.

Proficiency tests in computer technology and mathematics are offered several times during the Fall and Spring terms. The computer technology proficiency test is also offered during new student advising during the summer and in January.

Students may satisfy the writing proficiency by taking the writing placement test and placing at the English 106 level, and they may satisfy the foreign language proficiency by taking the foreign language test and placing at the 201 level or higher.

Here are additional ways in which students can satisfy the proficiency requirements.

Writing

  • Taking and passing ENG 105 Composition I with a grade of D or higher, or bringing in transfer credit for ENG 105
  • Taking the writing placement test on designated new student advising & registration dates and placing into ENG 106
  • AP credit (score of 3 or higher) for the English Language & Composition exam
  • IB credit (score of 5 or higher)
  • CLEP
  • ACT composite of 29 or SAT score of 1900 or higher

Mathematics

  • ACT mathematics score of 22 or SAT mathematics score of 560
  • AP, IB, or CLEP mathematics credit awarded at Elmhurst (see the College Catalog for more information)
  • Taking and passing an approved college-level math course, either at Elmhurst or at another institution, EXCEPT MTH 345, MTH 346, MTH 326
    • MTH 325 is restricted to Early Childhood, Elementary Education and Special Education majors
    • Mathematics course may be taken for a P or any passing letter grade
  • Passing the Mathematics proficiency test (see the Mathematics Study Guide for more information)

Because a number of majors have a math requirement that satisfies the Mathematics proficiency, this test is not offered on the first-year advising and registration dates. Students are encouraged to study before taking the mathematics proficiency test. The mathematics proficiency test is a repeatable test (no limits).

Foreign Language

  • Completing two or more years of the same language in high school with a grade of D or higher
  • Completing one year of language in college with a grade of D or higher (equivalent to the 102 level)
  • Taking the EC placement test (Spanish, French, German) and scoring (placing) at the 201 level or higher
  • AP credit (score of 3 or higher) for the appropriate language exam; IB credit (score of 5 or higher); or CLEP credit

Note: ESL classes do not satisfy the foreign language proficiency.

Computer Technology

  • Passing the computer technology proficiency test (see the Computer Technology Study Guide for more information)
    • Students may repeat this test once
    • First-year students should meet this proficiency in the first or second year at Elmhurst
    • Transfer students should meet this proficiency in their first year at Elmhurst
  • Taking the college-level class CS 111 Introduction to Software Applications and Digital Technology. This course may be taken for a passing letter grade or a P.
  • Transfer course (at least 3 semester hours) that includes Office Suite; must mention word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database management in course description
  • Education portfolios – ECE/EED/SEC/SPE 370 [later renumbered 450]; also ENG 370 and ART 370
  • Presenting official documentation of passing the Microsoft Excel Certification exam and one of any other Office Product exams. Contact John Jeffrey with any questions about this.
