Applying to Elmhurst as an International Student

Elmhurst College welcomes international students. On our classic American campus, you'll find students of many ages and from nearly every religious, racial and ethnic background. We draw students from many foreign countries and almost all 50 states. We also offer merit-based scholarships to help international students finance their education.

How to Apply
Prospective students who are neither citizens of the United States nor permanent residents of the United States should submit the following to the Office of Admission:

  • A completed application
  • High school transcript or General Education Development (GED) test results
  • A faculty recommendation
  • Official score on either the ACT or the SAT test
  • The results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language or the International English Language Testing System or the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery or the ELS-level 112 completion certificate

If you are applying for transfer admission, also submit an official transcript from each college or university attended. If your transcripts are not in English, you must submit both an official or certified copy in the original language, as well as a certified translation in English. Students with prior college/university level credit who wish to major in education, nursing or communication sciences and disorders MUST have an official course-by-course evaluation completed by an approved agency. Elmhurst College recommends Educational Credential Evaluators or World Educational Services.

Deadlines
For Fall Term: apply between December 1 and April 15, or until all spaces are filled.
For Spring Term: apply between October 1 and December 1.

Admission Criteria
Qualified applicants should show evidence of their ability to successfully complete college-level work in English. We look for minimum scores of:

  • 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL, or
  • 213 on the computer-based TOEFL, or
  • 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, or
  • 6.5 on the IELTS, or
  • 77 or better on the MELAB.

Students not able to meet these required scores should upgrade their English language proficiency at an ELS language center, where they must complete the certificate for the ELS-level 112.

The College gives preference to students who complete 16 academic units, including:

  • Three units of English
  • Two units of mathematics
  • Two units of laboratory sciences
  • Two units of social studies
  • Seven units in additional college preparatory subjects
