Winning in the classroom, winning on the field. At Elmhurst, student-athlete means just that. Each term most varsity athletes earn grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher. In the last year athletes from 12 of our 20 varsity teams have earned Academic All-American honors. Athletes from eight teams earned NCAA All-American honors—and four of those teams went on to win conference championships.
For our varsity athletes, joining a team is an integral part of the Elmhurst Experience. “The discipline, leadership skills and drive to excel that you learn on the field will serve you equally well in the classroom and throughout life,” says Athletic Director Paul Krohn. “Your Elmhurst Experience as a whole will take you to a higher level of performance—as a scholar, an athlete and a person. Our athletes don’t compete to trade their skills for a free ride on tuition or show off their game on ESPN. They compete as one way to develop their talents and realize their potential—and for the love of the game.”
With ten sports teams for both men and women, Elmhurst athletics will keep you on track in the classroom and excelling in your sport.
How about competing in Europe or Australia? Each year many of our varsity teams travel abroad to compete. Back in the U.S., our teams compete in tournaments, games and matches from Virginia to California.
First and foremost, our coaches are teachers. Each one understands that the Elmhurst Experience is about educating the entire person. Like our professors, our coaches will get to know you personally and individually and will serve you well as mentors and role-models.
Here’s a scholar-athlete you should meet. Scottie Williams ’13 exemplifies what the Elmhurst Experience is all about: a standout student-athlete whose many athletic, academic and service achievements earned him the 2012 Gagliardi Trophy as the NCAA Division III Player of the Year.
You’ll compete in excellent facilities. Langhorst Field, home to our football, lacrosse, track and soccer teams, boasts high-end artificial turf. Our basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams regularly host post-season events at the 1,800-seat R.A. Faganel Hall. The Tyrrell Fitness Center boasts state-of-the-art weight training, cardiovascular and rehabilitation facilities. Elmhurst also offers racquetball courts and a dance studio to round out your training needs.
