Graduate Certificate in Human Geography for AP®

Course Descriptions

One unit of credit equals four semester hours. 

APH 500 Teaching AP® Human Geography
.75 credit
Designed as the gateway course to the graduate certificate program and introduces the discipline of human geography to those new to the teaching of AP® Human Geography. This course is also beneficial as a refresher course to those who may have taught AP® Human Geography in the past. Pedagogical methodologies as well as some technology are introduced to educators who are teaching AP® Human Geography or will be teaching it in the future. The program content correlates directly with the AP® Human Geography course description.

APH 501 Learning to Teach Spatial Concepts and Tools 
.75 credit
Introduces spatial concepts and thinking to those who are new to teaching AP® Human Geography and/or other disciplines. This course is also beneficial as are fresher course to those who may have taught AP® Human Geography in the past. Pedagogical methodologies as well as technological tools in spatial concepts are introduced to educators who are teaching AP® Human Geography or will be teaching it in the future.

APH 502 Implementing Spatial Concepts and Tools into the Classroom 
.75 credit
Uses the spatial concepts and thinking learned in APH 501 to further implement the principles into the classroom. Pedagogical methodologies as well as technological tools in spatial concepts are implemented into the classroom setting to educators who are teaching AP® Human Geography or will be teaching it in the future.

APH 503 Teaching Urban, Economic, and Population Geography Issues 
.75 credit
This course builds upon the spatial concepts and thinking learned in APH 501 and 502 to further expand to include the topics which are traditionally most challenging in the AP® Human Geography curriculum (urban, economic, and population geography). Pedagogical methodologies as well as technological tools in urban, economic, and population (demographic) geography are implemented into the classroom setting to educators who are teaching AP® Human Geography or will be teaching it in the future.

APH 504 AP® Human Geography Capstone 
.75 credit
Designed as the final/capstone course in the graduate certificate program and builds upon the spatial concepts and thinking learned in previous coursework to instruct participants how to incorporate all of the skills and concepts into their lesson plans and classroom materials. Course participants will write a manuscript which details their lesson plan and how concepts will be incorporated into their teaching and subsequently submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. Participants will select one faculty member as an advisor/mentor to assist with the process.
