Founders Medals Awarded
On December 3rd, the College saluted three people who have made significant contributions to the College and its students, by awarding them the Elmhurst College Founders Medal. The honorees, Robert and Marcia Goltermann of Elmhurst and John Popp of Columbia, South Carolina (formerly of Elmhurst), were presented with their medals by College president Bryant Cureton.
Bob and Marcia Goltermann have been long supporters of both the College and the art community. In 1999, the couple established the Sandra Jorgensen Memorial Scholarship Fund, named to honor a beloved faculty member of the College's art department who passed away in 1999. The fund awards scholarships to female art students and increases in value as the student makes progress toward graduation. To date, the Fund has assisted over a dozen young women pursue their goals as artists and meet the costs of their college education. The couple also supports several local organizations including the Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Elmhurst: College and Community, a group of friends of the College.
John Popp has been a dedicated leader within the College community for nearly four decades. In 1969, Popp became a member of the College's Board of Trustees, and gave 37 years of service - a record unmatched by any College Board member. He served as a member of the Board's Executive Committee and the Faculty Curriculum Committee and was chairperson of the Audit Committee. Popp's depth of commitment is evidenced by his contributions of time, leadership and resources to several College initiatives, and also by arranging for corporations to support the College through matching-gift programs. In 1991, John established the John and Anna Popp Scholarship to assist full-time sophomore, junior and senior accounting majors at the College who rank in the top quarter of their class. Both John and his late wife, Anna Mae, graduated from the College in 1944.
