Elmhurst’s Skills for the Digital Earth MOOC (March 30–April 26) explores why “where?” is vitally important to a myriad of disciplines in our digital world.
This guide tells you what you need to know about registration and getting started as a newly admitted graduate student.
As a national partner with the GeoTech Center, Elmhurst and the GeoTech Center collaborate with other colleges, universities and industry to grow the geospatial workforce.
» M.S. in Applied Geospatial Sciences (AGS)
The U.S. Department of Labor has identified geospatial technologies as one of the three high-growth industries in the 21st century. As a result, the demand for individuals with specialized spatial skill sets continues to grow.
At Elmhurst College, you will acquire in-depth knowledge of the geospatial field and be introduced to spatial thinking and geographic information systems (GIS) as a tool used in a variety of applications in the industry. You will receive hands-on experience with real-world projects designed to be applied to actual geospatial issues. Furthermore, your spatial skill sets and technical skills will be developed in correlation with the Geospatial Technology Competency Model (GTCM), as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor and the National Geospatial Technologies Center of Excellence (GeoTech Center).
The master of science in applied geospatial sciences (AGS) at Elmhurst offers a customized geospatial experience. Designed for working professionals, the AGS program is offered entirely online through the Elmhurst College Online Center. In cohort-based classes, you will work with experienced educators and professionals to complete the program in two years. Elmhurst is one of only a handful of colleges—and one of the very few liberal-arts-based institutions in the country—with a dedicated GIS server, which provides hands-on experience for AGS students.
Elmhurst also offers a graduate certificate in applied geospatial sciences for students who currently do not wish to complete a full master’s program.
The applied geospatial sciences program adheres to the best practices for online education as presented by the Sloan Consortium, and the curriculum is based upon the U.S. Department of Labor’s Geospatial Technology Competency Model comprised of spatial skill sets.
