K-12 Art Education Certification

Elmhurst offers one of the area's few art education teacher certification programs. Students may prepare to teach at the elementary, middle/junior high, or high school level with K-12 certification. The art education program prepares you as an artist in your own right, and as a future teacher who will help your students develop their own visual literacy.

The art education program is certified by the State of Illinois Board of Education. It is essential that students interested in this field identify themselves as early as possible to Mary Lou Stewart, director of the art education program, and to the education department and confer regularly with their advisors.

Transfer students, including those with a degree in art from another institution, seeking only Illinois teacher certification in art education must take at least one full course from each of the following three categories from the Elmhurst College Department of Art: art history, studio, and art methods. Students with exceptional undergraduate qualifications or with post-graduate education in art may petition the director of the art education program to waive or modify this requirement.

Students are required to pass the Illinois Basic Skills Test to be admitted to a certification program, the appropriate content area test prior to the student teaching semester, and the APT (Assessment of Professional Teaching) test prior to program completion.
