About the Department

As a biology student at Elmhurst, you'll enjoy an invigorating mix of classroom and laboratory work, regional and overseas field study, and independent research. Here's some of what you'll find here:

  • Strong academic programs. U.S. News & World Report ranks Elmhurst among the top colleges in the Midwest. As a student here, your academic options also include courses through Argonne National Laboratory, Brookfield Zoo, and the Morton Arboretum.
  • Great facilities. Elmhurst has resources that you'd expect to find only at a large university. We offer multiple dedicated laboratories, including a greenhouse. Even the Elmhurst campus is a designated arboretum, with more than 600 plant species.
  • Research opportunities. Elmhurst's biology faculty are actively engaged in research, and students form a large part of our research team. Students regularly present their work at student research symposia.
  • International opportunities. The department regularly offers travel courses, including Ecology of the Hawaiian Islands, Tropical Biology, summer courses on the Natural History and Ecology of Central Europe, and the Teaching of Science in Europe.
  • A jump-start on your career. Elmhurst students get practical experience through internships with Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, Central DuPage Hospital laboratories, the Fish and Wildlife Service, Brookfield Zoo, and at various businesses. They also can choose among study tracks that provide excellent preparation for medical school or graduate school.
