Nicolas de Jesus is an internationally known printmaker from Mexico. He is a full-blooded Nahua Indian who descends from a long line of artisans. De Jesus is a defender of the rights of indigenous peoples and the themes of struggle and celebration constantly inform his work. Many of his etchings feature skeletons (calaveras) playing out the human comedy. This form of satirical social satire dates back to the 19th century and was made popular by the famous Mexican printmaker, Jose Guadalupe Posada. Nicolas de Jesus is the greatest living exponent of this form.
