Writing a Personal Statement

When applying to professional or graduate schools for health care programs, students will need to write a personal statement to identify their interest and background for this field and depending on the application, address their desire to be enrolled in a particular program. Some schools or centralized application systems will specifically delineate what they want covered while others will give no precise direction providing only vague instructions on what to include in a personal statment with the application. Regardless, there are certain techniques to be used when drafting an effective personal statement. For more details on what a personal statement is and how to create one, follow the links below.

Example of a Personal Statement

In all cases, students should begin writing their personal statement early. Students are encouraged to start the process their sophomore year if they plan to matriculate to professional or graduate school immediately after graduating. Several drafts are gone through and should be reviewed by others. Staff in the CHP are available to help in this process. Please come by for assistance to make sure you are on the right track.
