Service-Learning

Elmhurst College is a community in which the students, faculty and staff are dedicated to the development of the capacity to serve others and is a community where service to others and responsible citizenship are nurtured and practiced.

The purpose of the Service-Learning Program at Elmhurst College is to build reciprocal partnerships with communities in which students serve to learn and community members teach to experience empowerment.

Each term, more than 300 Elmhurst students work to strengthen the community beyond campus. The service-learning initiative links academic knowledge with social service in energizing and meaningful ways.

Students work with children with special needs at an Easter Seal Child Development Center, assist with ESL classes, help to care for homeless people, work with senior citizens, tutor elementary school children, provide assistance to refugee families and participate in many other domestic and international sites.

Your service-learning experience may consist of a few hours of practical coursework; a January Term, spring break, or summer immersion activity; or a long-term commitment crossing over several courses. Your efforts may address local, national or international issues. For more information, contact Dr. Mick Savage at (630) 617-6488.
