A shadowing or mentoring experience will help you develop professionally and prepare you for a meaningful and ethical life beyond college.
The Mentoring Program at Elmhurst College has two components: short-term career exploration (shadowing) and long-term professional preparation (mentoring).
Short-term career exploration (shadowing) gives you the opportunity to learn more about a career that interests you. In a shadowing experience, you accompany a professional through a typical work day, observing as that person makes decisions, engages colleagues and pursues professional goals. In some cases, the experience may involve an interview on campus or in the workplace.
You may engage in as many career exploration experiences as necessary. Ready to get started? Simply complete the STCE Form and submit it to the Center for Professional Excellence. We'll identify a professional in your field who is willing to work with you, and give you that person's contact information.
Before you arrive at the workplace, we encourage you to research your field of interest on ECconnect and compile a list of questions. It is also helpful to jot down what you currently think about the profession in order to provide a foundation for later reflection.
Long-term professional preparation, or mentoring, involves a one-on-one relationship between a student (protégé) and a professional (mentor) who can provide advice, direction and encouragement. Students typcially meet with their mentors at least once a month to discuss their career goals and interests.
To participate as a mentor or a protégé, start by submitting the appropriate forms (see list at right). Participants then attend orientation workshops to learn about different types of career exploration, program procedures and individual responsibilities. Once the student and mentor have begun their monthly meetings, participants complete activity reports and submit them to the College's mentoring coordinator.
