Career Timeline

The Center for Professional Excellence at Elmhurst College guides and supports students as they explore careers, refine professional goals and launch their job search. We strongly encourage you to engage in career education programs as early as your first year on campus.

Here’s a year-by-year overview of the career education process. 

First Year

  • Develop an academic plan with guidance from a faculty advisor.
  • Visit the Center for Professional Excellence. Schedule an appointment with a career coach who can help you explore careers and identify your skills and strengths.
  • Register and complete your online profile through ECconnect, the College’s online job listing service. (This site can also help you explore careers.)
  • Register for CPP 299 Professional Foundations of Career Development.
  • Attend a Career Expo to network and to gain insights into career areas of interest.
  • Participate in the First LEAP program.

Sophomore Year

  • Sign up for the Mentoring Program. Speak with family, friends and professionals about their careers. Spend a day on the job with a professional.
  • Attend Career Education events on topics ranging from career exploration to résumé writing, cover letters and interviewing strategies.
  • Meet with a Career Education staff member to create a résumé.
  • Update your online profile on ECconnect and sign up for Search Agent.
  • Attend a Career Expo to network with professionals and find out more about careers and internships.
  • Seek an internship that gives you professional work experience, personal contacts and potential for future employment. Attend Internship Fairs to find out more.
  • Attend campus-sponsored networking events to meet professionals.
  • Attend professional development workshops.
  • Participate in the Mock Interviewing event to develop essential interviewing skills.
  • Begin gathering information regarding scholarships (both undergraduate and postgraduate).

Junior Year

  • Update your résumé.
  • Sign up for the Mentoring Program if you haven’t already.
  • Attend CareerFest Job Fair, hosted by ISCPA, and check out other job fairs to fully explore internship possibilities.
  • Participate in ISCPA Virtual Career Fair.
  • Pursue internship opportunities by meeting with CPE professionals or networking with faculty, family, friends and associates.
  • Update your online profile and search for internships at ECconnect.
  • Apply for Fall Interview Day, hosted by the ISCPA, and check out other job fairs to explore internships.
  • Arrange informational interviews to learn more about career fields. The Center for Professional Excellence can assist you in locating professionals working in a variety of career fields.
  • Explore graduate or professional school by attending seminars.
  • Begin prep work for graduate school exams.
  • Gather information on organizations in your field.
  • Participate in a mock interviewing event or one-on-one with a career coach, to develop essential interviewing skills.
  • Attend Career Education programs on professional development.
  • Attend Career Expo to network with professionals and explore careers and internship opportunities.
  • Attend “Senior Year Career Prep” event.

Senior Year

  • Review and participate in recruitment opportunities available through the Center for Professional Excellence. Begin a targeted job search campaign and keep a log of all job search activity.
  • Update your online profile at ECconnect and sign up for Search Agent.
  • Update your résumé.
  • If you haven’t yet had an internship, check one out! If you have, consider a second internship.
  • Network with faculty, family, friends and associates to learn about internship and full-time job opportunities.
  • If you haven’t signed up for the CPE’s Mentoring Program, it’s not too late!
  • Attend Career Education programs on professional development.
  • Meet with a Career Education staff member to develop an employment search strategy.
  • Apply for ISCPA Fall Interview Day for internships and full-time employment.
  • Attend CareerFest Job Fair, hosted by ISCPA, and check out other job fairs to fully explore internship and full-time job opportunities.
  • Participate in the ISCPA Virtual Career Fair.
  • Take any necessary graduate school admission tests you haven’t already taken (GRE, LSAT, GMAT).
  • Apply to graduate programs.
  • Participate in a mock interviewing event or one-on-one with a career coach, to develop essential interviewing skills.
  • Attend on-campus information sessions hosted by companies in your field of interest.  Participate in on-campus interviewing opportunities (at Elmhurst College and ISCPA consortium schools).
