With billions in unpaid bills and the worst credit rating in the nation, the State of Illinois faces an ongoing crisis. Elmhurst College’s Fixing Illinois lecture series presents a variety of perspectives on the state’s problems and how to solve them.

Making Illinois Work Again
Bruce Rauner

Gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner retired last fall as chairman of the private equity firm GTCR, citing a desire to become more involved in political and civic activities. He and his wife, Diana, are active supporters of education reform, including the movement to expand charter schools and support teacher training.

Dennis Reboletti

Dennis Reboletti (R-Elmhurst) is serving his fourth term in the Illinois House of Representatives. He serves on several House committees, including Health Care Availability and Accessibility; Mass Transit; Public Utilities; and Transportation: Regulation, Roads & Bridges. A former prosecutor with a longtime interest in criminal justice issues, Reboletti serves as the Republican spokesperson on the House Judiciary Committee and the Restorative Justice Committee.

Making Illinois a Destination Economy for Job Creation and Families
Kirk Dillard

State senator Kirk Dillard represents the northeastern portion of DuPage and western Cook counties. In July, he announced his candidacy in the race for governor of Illinois. Before his election to the state Senate, Dillard worked as a judge for the Illinois Court of Claims and was named chief of staff for then-Governor Jim Edgar. He recently was appointed the assistant Republican leader in Springfield. Earlier this year, the Illinois Chamber of Commerce presented Dillard with the “Champion of Free Enterprise Award.”

Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) represents the 42nd District in the Illinois House of Representatives. She serves on the House Appropriations Committee for Elementary & Secondary Education, as well as the House committees on labor, cities and villages, mass transit, and international trade and commerce. Before her election to the House, Ives served on the Wheaton City Council.

Bill Brady

Bill Brady has served in the Illinois Senate since 2002 and previously was elected to four terms in the House of Representatives. He currently is an Assistant Senate Republican Leader, is the ranking Republican on the Senate Insurance Committee and sits on the transportation, state government and veterans affairs, agriculture and conservation, and environment committees.

Illinois’ Fiscal Crisis: Decades in the Making
Kwame Raoul

Since his 2004 arrival in Springfield, Illinois State Senator Kwame Raoul has championed legislation on criminal justice reform, including historic legislation abolishing the death penalty and numerous diversion and second-chance programs for nonviolent offenders. He now serves as chair of a conference committee tasked with breaking the deadlock on pension reform and has supported efforts to create and retain jobs in Illinois, including convention center reforms and a multibillion-dollar capital bill.

Ralph Martire is executive director of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, a bipartisan think tank committed to ensuring that state, federal and local workforce, education, fiscal, economic and budget policies are fair and just, and promote opportunity for all. He is the recipient of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition’s 2007 Champion of Freedom Award.

Tonia Khouri is a member of the DuPage County Board, where she serves as chairwoman of the Economic Development Committee and the Ad Hoc Mass Transit Committee. She also serves on the Finance Committee, the Judicial and Public Safety, the Health and Human Services, the Environmental Committee and the Legislative Committee.

Fixing Illinois
James Durkin

State Rep. James Durkin has served as House Republican leader since August of 2013, and has represented the 82nd District since 2006; he also served in the House from 1995 until 2002. He was the ranking Republican on the Illinois House of Representatives Special Investigation Committee for the impeachment of then-Governor Rod Blagojevich, and was the House manager for the removal of a sitting member of the Illinois House of Representatives.
