Minor in Middle Level Education

For students admitted to a teacher education program

Completion of this minor requires a minimum of fourteen semester hours of course work. Students will be required to complete the courses with grades of C (2.0) or higher while maintaining an overall grade-point average of 2.750 in education course work and a 2.750 cumulative grade-point average.

This minor includes all requirements for middle level approval on a K-9, K-12, or 6-12 teaching certificate.  Areas of endorsement will be needed to teach at the middle level (see below). Beginning in fall 2009, elementary education teacher candidates who plan to student teach at the middle level (i.e., enroll in EDU 453 Student Teaching at the Middle Level) will be required to complete the minor prior to student teaching.

Optimally, courses should be completed in the following sequence, however exceptions may apply:

  • EDU 260 Introductory Seminar in Middle Level Education (Quarter course)
  • EDU 361 Understanding the Middle Level Learner (PSY 318 is a course equivalent)
  • EDU 360 The Middle School: History, Philosophy, Organizational Structures, and Best Practices
  • EDU 462 Curriculum Integration for the Middle School
  • EDU 472 Capstone Seminar in Middle Level Education (Quarter course)
