About ELSA
A four-year program, ELSA provides a full-time, post-secondary educational experience to young adults with developmental disabilities. The program emphasizes three key areas:
- Academics. Working with our faculty and with master and upper-level students at Elmhurst College, ELSA students increase their literacy and technical skills and their capacity for writing, mathematics, purposeful reading, and reading for pleasure. Field trips to museums and attendance at cultural events are integral components of the program.
- Work Experience. Students gain hands-on experience both on and off campus; explore their employment interests, abilities, and opportunities; complete internships; and learn how to seek and apply for jobs.
- Social and Recreational Experience. Students participate fully in the student life of the College. They join campus clubs and organizations, work with Elmhurst College students serving as peer mentors, develop their facility for leisure and recreation, and enhance their capacity for independent living.
Upon completion of the ELSA program, students receive a certificate from the Academy. Each student is invited to attend evening support seminars offered periodically at the College. What’s more, each student will be better prepared to hold a job and live with greater independence in the community or with their families.
