Major in German

German majors at Elmhurst learn to use German to narrate in connected discourse, understand most details on a variety of topics, comprehend substantive texts in selected fields, write about a significant number of topics with a high degree of accuracy, and function appropriately in the culture.

Requirements for the Major
The German major consists of seven courses (28 hours) beginning at the 300-level, chosen from among the following areas:

  • Conversation/composition
  • Culture
  • Literature
  • At least one semester in Salzburg, Austria, with the Bowling Green State University program.

Students should generally take German 301 and 302 before enrolling for other 300 or 400-level courses.

WL 319 The Nature of Language is recommended as an additional course for all world language majors. World language majors are urged to complete requirements for a second major as well.

Students can complete the requirements for the major even if they have not studied the language before coming to Elmhurst. Those who have had previous exposure to a foreign language are given a placement exam to determine the proper course level.
