It is best to start deciding on a direction early in your undergraduate career.

Research areas of interest, specific institutions, and programs.

Be sure to consider geography when making your initial list of schools. Family, financial, or other considerations may require you to attend graduate school in a certain area, so you may want to limit your research to institutions that are in a specific area of the country or world.
