About the Department

The tale of the human experience through time is a compelling and exciting study. At Elmhurst, we pride ourselves on teaching the collective story of humankind with the insight it deserves. Here's what you'll find at Elmhurst:

  • A personal learning environment. Our student-faculty ratio of 13 to 1 ensures that you'll develop close relationships with your professors. In small classes, you'll work face to face with faculty who are at Elmhurst because they love to teach.
  • Great teaching. The faculty historians at Elmhurst are top-notch professionals with wide-ranging areas of expertise, representing an excellent cross-section of diverse fields of study. Our varied faculty includes specialists in America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. A professor, never a teaching assistant, teaches every class here.
  • Strong academic programs. U.S.News & World Report ranks Elmhurst among the top colleges in its category. We teach students of history to evaluate information, research and write compellingly, and assess competing arguments. In other words, our history students develop the skills that are crucial to success in any career.
