16th Holocaust Education Project
Posted on: December 09, 2005
From March 30-April 5, Elmhurst College will host its 16th annual Holocaust Education Project. Highlighting the event will be eyewitness accounts from persons who liberated concentration camps, notably keynote speaker Dr. Leon Bass.
Dr. Bass will speak Sunday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Frick Center, Founders Lounge. His speech wll be preceded at 7:00 p.m. by a solemn service of remembrance.
Bass helped to liberate the Buchenwald concentration camp as a 19-year-old, African-American soldier in a segregated U.S. Army unit. Stunned by his experiences at Buchenwald, he realized for the first time that human suffering was not limited to his own people. Bass has since worked to educate others about the Holocaust, and to promote understanding between African-Americans and Jews. CPDU CREDITS ARE AVAILABLE FOR EDUCATORS AT THIS EVENT.
Events during the 2006 Elmhurst College Holocaust Education Project: • More talks by liberators, including former Elmhurst Mayor Abner Ganet • Two showings of a documentary film, “The Liberators,” about black, U.S. Army soldiers who freed prisoners from Nazi death camps • “Facing History and Ourselves,” a workshop which uses the Holocaust as a vehicle to examine just, ethical decision-making (Weds., April 5, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., Frick Center, Alexander Room). CPDU CREDITS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THIS EVENT. • A presentation by Elmhurst College students who recently visited Holocaust camps and sites
