Dear Members of the Elmhurst College Community:
We are all shocked and saddened by the report of an attack last night against a student on our campus. According to the information we have received, the victim, a Muslim woman, was attacked in a bathroom of the science center at approximately 8:30 p.m.
Information about the incident has already been emailed to you by Campus Security and you will be informed as additional information becomes available.
I write to express the College’s deep concern about this incident and inform you of steps we are taking today to promote the safety of all on our campus and especially our Muslim students.
-There will be increased Elmhurst Police patrols on and around our campus, both on foot and patrol car.
-Detectives will be available to speak with anyone who wishes to share information with authorities.
-We will lock certain low-usage buildings earlier than usual today. You will be informed which buildings these will be.
-The EC Crisis Care Team has met and will provide group counseling in the Frick Center and residence halls. You will be informed by Student Affairs when these counseling sessions will be available.
-Campus Security will be in touch with our Muslim students today to offer safety escort services around the campus. These services are also available to any EC student, faculty or staff member who feels they would like to use them.
-Students who do not feel safe on campus are excused from attending classes today.
I encourage all members of our community to cooperate fully with law enforcement in its investigation of this despicable incident. Help law enforcement by sharing any information you have. My prayers and thoughts go out to all of you but especially to our Muslim students. Elmhurst College is and will remain a strong community thanks to all of you.
Sincerely,
S. Alan Ray
President
