President Cureton to Retire
Posted on: June 15, 2007
The President of Elmhurst College, Dr. Bryant L. Cureton, announced on June 15 that he plans to retire from his position at the end of the 2007-2008 academic year.
In a letter to the campus community, Cureton said, “It has been an honor to be part of this very special College and it has been professionally rewarding to watch it flourish. So many people, past and present, have helped make Elmhurst ‘what college ought to be,’ and I am grateful to them all. My wife Jeanette and I will always remember the warmth of your friendship and the strength of your support.”
Cureton assumed the presidency in 1994 after 23 years at Hartwick (NY) College, where he taught and served as vice president and dean of the faculty, and then as provost.
During Cureton’s tenure, Elmhurst College has enjoyed a period of strong growth, with significant increases in full-time student enrollment, in the academic strength of entering classes, in graduation rates, in the size of the full-time faculty, and in the College’s financial resources.
Graduate-level programs have been introduced during Cureton’s years as President, and several new campus buildings have been added, including an additional residence hall currently under construction. In recent years, the College has consistently been listed near the top of its category in national rankings.
The Elmhurst College Board of Trustees is initiating a national search to identify the College’s next president; the Board will appoint a search committee composed of members of the Board, and representatives from the faculty, the staff, and the student body to lead that process.
