Ethicist to Talk About Responsibility and the Intergrity of Life

William Schweiker, a scholar whose work focuses on Christian theological ethics, will present “Responsibility and the Integrity of Life,” Elmhurst College’s annual Niebuhr Lecture, on Wednesday, February 23.

Professor Schweiker will speak at 7:00 p.m. in the Frick Center, Founders Lounge. The lecture is free and open to the public.

William Schweiker is director of the Martin Marty Center and the Edward L. Ryerson Distinguished Service Professor of Theological Ethics at the University of Chicago’s Divinity School. His scholarship and teaching explore theological, ethical and interpretive questions attentive to global dynamics, comparative religious ethics and the history of ethics. Schweiker has written, co-authored and edited numerous books, including Responsibility and Christian Ethics (1995); Power, Value and Conviction: A Companion to Religious Ethics (2004); Religion and the Human Future: An Essay in Theological Humanism (2008, with David E. Klemm); and Dust that Breathes: Christian Faith and the New Humanisms (2010).

His presentation for this year’s Niebuhr Lecture draws on his current research for a new book on ethics and the integrity of life. Integrating scholarship with passion, Schweiker also is an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church.

Schweiker’s visit to Elmhurst College is part of Still Speaking: Conversations on Faith, the College’s yearlong series of dialogues on faith—its varieties, contradictions and influence in the modern world.

Elmhurst College’s Niebuhr Lecture Series is a distinctive event in the life of the College, and dates back to the early 1960s. It is held in honor of two of its most esteemed alumni, theologians Reinhold Niebuhr (Class of 1910), and H. Richard Niebuhr (Class of 1912), the College’s sixth president (1924-1927).
