College Hosts School District 205 Art Faculty Exhibition

During an exhibition beginning on January 15, Elmhurst College will showcase the work of selected art faculty who teach in Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205.

The District 205 Art Faculty Exhibition, to be held in Elmhurst College’s Barbara A. Kieft Accelerator ArtSpace, highlights the work of nine artists who teach in most of the district’s 13 schools, from the elementary level through York High School. The artists also are highly regarded in the Elmhurst community as the instructors and mentors of current students, parents and alumni from the district.

As a highlight of the show, a public reception for the artists will be held on Tuesday, January 22, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

This is Elmhurst College’s third exhibition of works by District 205 art faculty. “For a student, it’s truly thrilling to see your teacher’s work,” said Suellen Rocca, curator and director of exhibits at the College. “The show also is very popular with the Elmhurst community—the opening reception is always a wonderful mix of students, parents, colleagues and friends.”

The featured artists include:

  • Kathryn Bernahl, Lincoln Elementary School
  • Rich Edgley, York High School
  • Jen Leban, Sandburg Middle School
  • Jeune Winchester, Bryan Middle School
  • Kelsey Manning, York High School
  • Maria Marotta, Emerson Elementary School
  • Terry Neigel, Field Elementary School and Conrad Fischer Elementary School
  • Ashley Skinner, Churchville Middle School
  • Tom Wolfe, York High School (art department chair)

“As art teachers, we are busy enriching our students in various areas, whether it’s through teaching different mediums, cultures and history, or talking about different art careers,” said Jeune Winchester, who teaches at Bryan Middle School. “Part of that enrichment is showing students that their art teachers also are active artists. The Elmhurst College K-12 faculty art exhibit is an amazing venue for us to show our talents!”

The District 205 Art Faculty Exhibition runs from January 15 through February 9. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. During the show, the Barbara A. Kieft Accelerator ArtSpace gallery will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. The Accelerator ArtSpace is in the 200 block of West Park Avenue, just behind the College’s Mill Theatre.

The District 205 Art Faculty Exhibition is one of roughly a dozen shows that Elmhurst College will present this academic year in three different on-campus venues. Elmhurst College takes pride in its exhibits, as well as its unparalleled collection of Chicago Imagist and Abstractionist art, on display in the A.C. Buehler Library.
