Richard Florida to Discuss ‘The Rise of the Creative Class’

What do colleges and universities bring to a society? Among other things, they form the basis of great cities where smart people want to live, fostering open and dynamic urban environments and attracting business and capital. Richard Florida established the significance of this emerging “creative class” in a best-selling book that confirmed his reputation as a preeminent urban theorist.

Florida will discuss his book, The Rise of the Creative Class, at Elmhurst College on September 19.

His lecture is part of Elmhurst College’s Education in Crisis lecture series, a yearlong look at the significant challenges facing American education. Other speakers in the series will include Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Peg Tyre, immigration scholar William Perez and author and historian Taylor Branch.

Florida is the director of the Martin Prosperity Institute at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, a global research professor at New York University and founder of the Creative Class Group consulting firm. He also is a senior editor for The Atlantic, where he cofounded and serves as editor-at-large for Atlantic Cities, the world’s leading media site devoted to cities and urban affairs. TIME magazine recognized his Twitter feed as one of the 140 most influential in the world, while Esquire has included him on its annual list of ”The Best and the Brightest.”

Florida’s talk will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel. A book signing will follow the lecture. For educators, Florida’s lecture qualifies for Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDUs). Forms will be available at the event. Admission is $20 for the general public and free for Elmhurst College students, faculty, staff and alumni. Tickets are available online. For more information, call (630) 617-3390.
