Elmhurst to Celebrate the First Amendment on November 19

On Tuesday, November 19, Elmhurst College will celebrate the First Amendment to the Constitution with a day of activities, exhibits and discussions.

Ken Paulson, president of the First Amendment Center, will present a keynote speech, “Lessons in Liberty: The Great First Amendment Quiz.” Paulson is dean of the College of Mass Communication at Middle Tennessee State University and a former editor-in-chief of USA Today. He also is a columnist for USA Today, writing about First Amendment issues and the news media, as well as the founder of “1 for All,” a national campaign on behalf of the First Amendment that is supported by more than 1,100 news, arts and religious organizations.

Elmhurst College’s “1 For All” events will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19, in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center. All of the day’s events are free and open to the public.

9:00-10:00 a.m.: Film screening: The First Amendment Project: What's Left of our Rights?

10:00-11:30 a.m.: Public performances, including readings from banned books, a reading from the play 8 and a soloist interpretive dance

11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Keynote presentation: Lessons in Liberty: The Great First Amendment Quiz, by Ken Paulson, president of the First Amendment Center and dean of the College of Mass Communication at Middle Tennessee State University

1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m.: Freedom of the Press panel discussion with:

  • Frank LaMonte, executive director of the Student Press Law Center in Washington, D.C.
  • Rafia Zakaria, constitutional law professor at Indiana University and also a columnist for Al-Jazeera, DAWN, and Ms. Magazine
  • Blaine Kimrey, a former journalist and now a partner in the Chicago law firm of Lathrop & Gage, where he specializes in media law
  • Ed Yohnka, director of communications for the American Civil Liberties Union

2:30-3:45 p.m.: Free-press workshop with Frank LaMonte, executive director of the Student Press Law Center in Washington, D.C.

3:45-4:00 p.m.: Dedication of the Liberty Tree
