College Honors Four with Founders Medal

Elmhurst College has awarded the 2013 Founders Medal, one of its most prestigious honors, to four of the College's most steadfast and dedicated supporters: Raymond and Sally Allen, Denise Jones ’90 and Dr. George Langeler ’49.

Established in 1978, the Founders Medal recognizes individuals who have dedicated themselves to furthering the College's mission through personal service and philanthropy. This year's medals were awarded on Friday, October 25, at the Frick Center during a ceremony attended by the College's Board of Trustees and College officials. President S. Alan Ray presented the medals to the recipients.

Raymond and Sally Allen have been loyal friends of Elmhurst College ever since they first attended the College’s annual Jazz Festival in the mid-1980s. The Allens have supported Elmhurst in a variety of ways over the years, including mentoring art students, donating numerous art books to the College library, and establishing the Sally and Ray Allen Art Fund to support the Department of Art. The Allens also provided integral funding for the John Weber Mural Project, which supported the creation and installation of a series of mosaics throughout the campus.

Graduates of the University of Colorado, where they met and married in 1954, the Allens support many additional arts and education initiatives in Elmhurst, Oak Brook and Chicago.

Denise Jones ’90 served the College for many years as a staff member and administrator before retiring in 2012. Hired as a cashier in 1984, she worked full time while earning her bachelor's degree at Elmhurst and moved through a series of successively more responsible positions to become senior vice president for finance and administration. Jones received the College's Alumni Merit Award in 2004 and served on numerous committees and panels, mostly in support of women's initiatives and the furthering of science and health initiatives on campus. In retirement, she continues to serve the College in an advisory role on a part-time basis.

Jones and her husband, John, support the Trevor W. Pinch Endowed Scholarship Fund, which honors Jones’s mentor at Elmhurst. They have three children, all of whom are Elmhurst College alumni.

After graduating from the College in 1949 with a major in biology, George Langeler taught at Elmhurst for five years. He spent the rest of his career at Oberlin College, where he served in several roles, including director of financial aid, acting associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and dean of students.

A member of the Elmhurst College Board of Trustees since 1974, Langeler is a recipient of the College’s Alumni Merit Award, has served as class agent, and is a generous supporter of the sciences at Elmhurst.
