Art Students Showcase Work in Senior Capstone Exhibition

Eight senior art students use digital art, pen and ink, graphic and web design, paint, vintage photos and other media to convey a variety of themes during the Elmhurst College Art Department’s 46th Annual Spring Capstone Art Exhibition.

This exhibition is the high point for every graduating art major. Students work to create a body of work in their area of concentration, then plan the exhibition and design all of the promotional materials for it.

“These emerging artists have created innovative displays that are both intriguing and thought-provoking,” said Suellen Rocca, curator of exhibits for Elmhurst College.

Among the exhibitors:

  • Luke Dolezal, of Downers Grove, created a series of pen-and-ink drawings that tell the story of an imaginary group of heroes who once saved the world but became corrupted, allowing bizarre and terrifying monsters to rise in their place.
  • McKinley Skemp, a graphic design major, designed all of the marketing elements for a food truck in Austin, Texas, that specializes in barbecue. Skemp’s display includes the logo, truck design, menu, flyers, punch cards, packaging for the barbecue sauce, website, app, T-shirts and other promotional items.
  • Jordan Cannon-Bobholz, of Bensenville, is doing a series of acrylic paintings based on the theme, “It is the little things in life that matter.”

The exhibition also includes work by Angie Koch of Dubuque, Iowa (graphic design); Lucy Mason of Oak Park (graphic design); Kim McElheny of Lockport (digital art); Felicia Roumeliotis of Shorewood (graphic design); McKinley Skemp of Dubuque, Iowa (graphic design); and Becky Webber of Oswego (graphic design).

The Elmhurst College Spring Capstone Art Exhibition runs from Saturday, May 10, through Saturday, May 31, in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center and the Barbara A. Kieft Accelerator ArtSpace on the Elmhurst campus. The Frick Center is open daily; the Accelerator ArtSpace is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m.

A public reception will be held on Saturday, May 10, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center, and from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. in the Barbara A. Kieft Accelerator ArtSpace. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
