College is a dream for most teenagers. However, for many individuals with disabilities, attending a college-like program has not been possible. That is, until Elmhurst College created one.
The Elmhurst Life Skills Academy (ELSA) is a four-year program that provides a full-time, post secondary educational experience to young adults with developmental disabilities.
This year, Elmhurst College celebrated its first-ever graduating class of the Elmhurst Life Skills Academy. The program, which promotes independent living, emphasizes three key areas: academics, work experience, and social/recreational experiences.
Upon completion of the ELSA program, students are better prepared to hold a job and live with greater independence in the community or with their families.
A segment on the Academy and its students was recently spotlighted by Karen Meyer on the Disability Issues segment of ABC-7 News. You can watch the clip below.
