The Elmhurst College Life Skills Academy (ELSA) was spotlighted at the State Fair, held in Springfield August 13-22.
ELSA, which offers a college-like experience for students with disabilities, represented Elmhurst as one of five colleges in Illinois chosen to present at the Illinois Innovations in Higher Education tent.
“It really was an honor to represent the College at the Illinois State Fair, particularly as an innovative Illinois college program in the Governor’s tent,” said Tim Ahlberg, assistant director of Adult and Graduate Enrollment. “I spoke with many local special education teachers and EC alumni, as well as several prospective ELSA, undergraduate and graduate students. It was also a pleasure to discuss ELSA and Elmhurst College with Governor Quinn. Already familiar with our campus, he was pleased to see us at the fair.”
A four-year certificate program, ELSA provides a full-time, post-secondary, educational experience to young adults with developmental, physical and cognitive disabilities. The program emphasizes three key areas: academics, work experience, and social and recreational experiences. Upon completion of the ELSA program, students are better prepared to hold a job and live with greater independence in the community or with their families.
A segment on the Academy and its students was recently spotlighted by Karen Meyer on the Disability Issues segment of ABC-7 News. You can watch the clip here.
