Dr. Ray is a member of the Cherokee nation, and his inauguration included ceremonial elements traditional to both Elmhurst College and Native American cultures.
Participants in the inauguration made their way from the Frick Center to Hammerschmidt Chapel in a drumming processional, and the ceremony included the smudging of the chapel interior, a rite of purification and preparation. Participants and visitors were welcomed to the Chapel by the traditional ringing of the College's hash bell, and the service of investiture included the passing of the bronze medallion of the College from significant members of the Elmhurst community to Dr. Ray.
