About the Department
Political science students at Elmhurst explore how governments work, how societies are structured, and how laws express political systems. Our political science department focuses on the critical questions facing all citizens today. Here’s what you’ll find at Elmhurst:
- Academic excellence. U.S.News & World Report ranks Elmhurst among the top 10 comprehensive colleges in the Midwest. The political science department is known for its strong programs in constitutional law, political philosophy, international political and economic relations, and the politics of the Third World.
- A personal learning environment. Elmhurst is a small school where individuals count. You’ll work directly with top-notch professors—never teaching assistants—who are at Elmhurst because they love to teach. Your professors will get to know you as a person, in and out of the classroom.
- A wealth of great extras. Political science majors have plenty of opportunities to gain experience at Elmhurst. For example, our Mock Trial Team competes—and wins!—in regional and national tournaments. Each spring term one student participates in the Washington Semester Program. In addition, the department encourages majors to take on an internship or study abroad.
- A rewarding career path. Our political science alumni go on to rewarding careers or further education. Many go to law school; others earn a Ph.D. in political science or a master’s of public administration degree. Still others are teachers or members of the business community.
