Certificate in Secondary Teaching

Students who wish to teach in secondary schools may pursue a teaching certificate in conjunction with a psychology major. For more information on teacher education at Elmhurst, see Department of Education.

Secondary education students majoring in psychology are required to take nine psychology course credits, including the following:

  • EDU 311/PSY 311
  • At least two 300-level courses in psychology
  • PSY 355 or MTH 345/346
  • PSY 356 and
  • PSY 440

See the psychology department chair for additional psychology requirements.

In addition, the student must take required courses in the education department. The student should maintain close contact with both the psychology and education departments to assure completion of both major requirements and requirements for teacher certification.

In addition, students must complete courses in broadfield social studies. (See Education Department for a complete listing of broadfield courses.) Students are required to pass the Illinois Basic Skills Test to be admitted to a certification program, the appropriate contact area test prior to the student teaching semester, and the APT (Assessment of Professional Teaching) test prior to program completion.
