Voter Information

Elmhurst College has all the resources you need to become an engaged, educated and registered voter in Illinois or your home state. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Decide where you want to vote.
First-time voters may be required to vote in person, so if you can't travel home on Election Day to cast your ballot in person, consider registering in Illinois at your Elmhurst College address. Learn more about state-specific requirements at the Fair Elections Network.
  • Find out the deadline for Voter Registration.
In many states, the voter registration deadline changes each year. Go to the Illinois State Board of Elections website for specific dates for Illinois. If you want to vote in a state other than Illinois, refer to your home state election guidelines.
Voter registration guidelines differ from state to state. In Illinois you can register in person, by mail or online by completing the voter registration application. To learn more about voting in your home state or in Illinois, go to the Fair Elections Network.
  • Verify your voter registration.
If you believe you are already registered to vote in Illinois, go to the state's voter information site. For all other states, contact the local election authority to confirm your registration.
  • Educate yourself!
Voters frequently express frustration about not knowing what to believe in political campaigning. For details about who is running for office in Illinois, go to the Illinois State Board of Elections Information for Voters website. The “Who is Running for Office” page, along with the “Illinois Voters Guide” provide valuable resources to help you become more informed. Outside of the state, go to your state’s Board of Elections for more information. Check the facts by going to factcheck.org, a nonpartisan, nonprofit “consumer advocate” that “aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics.”

For more information about becoming an informed, registered voter, contact Laura Wilmarth Tyna in the Office of Leadership, Service and Engagement (Room 240, Frick Center) at (630) 617-3687.
