For new students, the Elmhurst Experience begins with Orientation—a chance to explore, meet new people and get accustomed to college life.
Designed for incoming, first-year Elmhurst College students, the President’s Leadership Academy (PLA) is a four-year leadership development program focused on preparing first-generation students and students of color to graduate as professionals and principled citizen leaders.
The Academy features two components. The first begins the summer before a student's first year with an academic experience that focuses on leadership, oral communication, reading, quantitative reasoning and writing. The summer component also includes opportunities to learn about campus resources, to explore transition skills, and to connect with students, faculty and staff. This experience takes place July 28-August 19.
The second component of the Academy takes place during each of the student’s first, second, third and fourth years at the College. Four overarching program components remain at the forefront of the Academy, while the year-to-year programming shapes participants' progress through their undergraduate experience at Elmhurst.
Participants in the program receive a four-year renewable book stipend, contingent upon their full participation in all aspects of the four-year program.
