After students participate in the summer academic component before their first year at Elmhurst, they will participate in intentional, themed programming each year at the College as their cognitive and developmental needs evolve. The Academy's programming and support will help shape participants into fully engaged professionals and citizens.
Academic Summer Component
Three weeks prior to the start of the fall semester of their first year, Academy participants will learn about leadership, including the reading, writing, oral communication, and quantitative reasoning components of leadership. Additionally, students will learn about campus resources, explore transition issues, and connect with peers, faculty and staff. The summer experience will take place July 27–August 16, 2014. All program participants must live on campus during this time.
Year 1: Self-Formation
Students will engage in leadership development and personal exploration with a focus on college transition. Topics include values exploration, navigating Elmhurst College, and personal fiscal responsibility.
Year 2: Citizen Leadership
Sophomores in the Academy will focus on themselves as leaders within a broader context, building on the personal exploration of the first year.
Year 3: Career Exploration
The Academy's third-year students begin to chart a path toward a career by identifying connections between their own personal values and those within specific career options.
Year 4: Professional Preparation
As graduation approaches, fourth-year students focus on their transition into professional employment or entering graduate school. Topics include the job search, personal financial options, understanding health care choices, and other issues and challenges faced by new graduates.
