» Summer Academy
This summer, give yourself a head start on a dynamic career at Elmhurst College's Summer Academy in Mathematics & Science.
The Academy is a remarkable two-week program for high school students who are considering careers in such exciting areas as mathematics, and the natural and physical sciences. In classes and seminars, you'll sharpen your math skills, explore important topics in science, and master a variety of computer programs.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis beginning March 1. Space is limited to 20 students.
How does it work?
For two weeks, you'll live on our beautiful campus and study with Elmhurst's exceptional math and science faculty. Classes will be held in a block schedule and cover topics such as advanced biology, chemistry, and math. You'll attend classes every day from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., but you'll also have plenty of time for fun outside the classroom.
Who's it for?
The program is ideal for students in high school who are considering careers in fields like mathematics, biology, chemistry, medicine, and nursing. Minimally, students should have taken coursework in algebra, geometry, biology and chemistry.
What will I learn?
Classes expand on what you've already learned during your first two years of high school. You will sharpen your skills in advanced algebra, and trigonometry, and discover the real-world applications of math and science.
You'll have plenty of opportunities to use computers and the Internet to explore math and science. You'll get familiar with major software packages used in math and science, including Derive, PCSolve, Mathematica, and Maple.
But that's not all. You'll also gain the skills and confidence to excel, in college and beyond. And you'll experience campus life at a great college with an expanding reputation for excellence. You'll meet our top-notch faculty, get to know Elmhurst students, and gain confidence in your ability to succeed in college.
Who teaches the classes?
The Academy is under the direction of Elmhurst College Professor of Mathematics, Dr. Evans Afenya, and classes are taught by our outstanding math and science faculty. In class and out, you will work closely with Elmhurst faculty members and students, forming teams to explore issues in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics.
Students stay in one of our residence halls on the College Mall. Men and women live on separate floors.
How much does it cost?
Participants pay just a $200 registration fee. All other costs are covered by Elmhurst College, which includes classes, meals, on-campus residence, and access to all of Elmhurst's excellent facilities. If financial assistance is needed, please contact Rayya Ghusein in the Office of Admission at (630) 617-3594 or via email at email@example.com for available options.
If you'd like to earn college credit for your Summer Academy classes (three semester hours, or the equivalent of MTH 110, Introduction to Concepts in Mathematics and Computing), the cost is additional $300. (Not eligible if applying for a need based scholarship.)
How do I apply?
Applications will become available March 1 and are accepted on a rolling basis.
To qualify for the Academy, students must clearly demonstrate their interest in mathematics and the sciences. Specifically, students will be expected to have a good college preparatory background in mathematics, biology, and chemistry courses in high school and be recommended by their high school mathematics or science teachers. In certain circumstances, prospective participants may be invited for an interview with the Academy Director to determine eligibility.
When do I start?
The Academy begins on Sunday, July 21, with a meeting for students, parents, faculty, and staff. We encourage your parents to attend the meeting because their participation in the Summer Academy will help them be active partners in your college experience.
What if I have more questions?
