About the Department

Founded in 1969 by Professor Emeritus Andrew Prinz, Elmhurst's Department of Urban Studies was among the first college programs in the nation devoted to the study of cities. For more on Dr. Prinz, see Prospect (pdf).

Today, the department maintains its focus not just on large cities, but on entire metropolitan areas, including suburbs. Here's some of what you'll find here:

  • Proximity to the world-class city of Chicago. Only 16 miles from campus is downtown Chicago—our extended classroom. You'll attend meetings and hearings, interview city officials, and meet with congressmen, senators, and mayors.
  • Real-world experience. Most students participate in an internship or participate in a political campaign for office. In the past, Elmhurst students have worked on campaigns for the U.S. Senate and the presidency.
  • International opportunities. Elmhurst students visit some of the world's most dynamic cities. Tours are packed with meetings with city officials and visits to municipal offices and facilities.
  • A great career path. Elmhurst urban studies graduates have distinguished themselves in local government and planning, working as city planners, city managers, police chiefs, judges, environmental managers, and public administrators. Many graduates go on to law school or pursue studies in urban planning, public administration, and human services.
