Immunizations

The following immunizations are available at the Wellness Center. For more information about immunization requirements and recommendations, please see Required Immunizations.

Hepatitis A. A viral infection, which is highly contagious and sometimes fatal. It is found in the stool of persons infected with Hepatitis A and spread through person-to-person contact or through contaminated food and water. A two-shot series (the second shot is given 6 months after the first) offers up to 10 years of protection.

Hepatitis B. College students are at risk for Hepatitis B, a serious infectious disease that attacks the liver and can lead to lifelong infection and even death. The virus is spread when an individual comes in contact with blood or other body fluids of an infected person through broken skin or mucous membranes. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/

Flu (influenza). The Center for Disease Control encourages anyone who wants to reduce his or her chances of catching influenza to get vaccinated. Influenza can be a serious disease requiring hospitalization. It causes thousands of deaths each year.

Varicella (Chicken pox). Chicken pox is more than just a childhood disease. While the symptoms are usually mild in children, college students may be 10 times more likely than children to develop serious complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis, and even death.

Chicken pox may spread more easily in a college living environment, and college students are considered to be more susceptible to the disease.
